      Activators are used in both sulfur and peroxide vulcanization. In peroxide vulcanization they are called coagents. The action of activators is to increase the effectiveness of cross-linking of vulcanizing units.

      The most frequently used activator is zinc oxide, both in the case of sulfur vulcanization and sulfur donor vulcanization.

      Zinc oxide, as a vulcanization activator, requires the presence of fatty acids that enable its transformation into a soluble form.
