Conformal coatings

Varnishes are used as thin layers on printed circuits or other electronic devices. Coatings protect electronic components against moisture and contamination, prevent short circuits and corrosion of soldered connections. In addition, the use of coatings protects printed circuit boards against scratches (in the case of hard coatings) and solvents.

These products are applied by traditional dipping, spraying and increasingly by selective coating or automatic dipping. In some cases, it is possible to use a brush to fill in the gaps.

In the production of electronic devices, it is often desirable to save or recover damaged or defective components. Silicone coatings offer excellent repair properties because once applied, the coating can be removed from the surface by scratching or cutting. An alternative to mechanical processes may be the use of solvents adapted to a given coating. Importantly, silicone coatings are "solderable". This gives us the opportunity to desolder and solder a new element through the coating, and then complete the coating using a brush.

The coatings come in a variety of product forms:

  • Room-temperature cured solvent-free coatings –  requiring moisture from the air to cure. This family of products is gaining popularity by their friendly properties. Their curing can be accelerated by supplying mild heat (up to 600 C). These elastomers, when cured, offer optimal stress-relief resistance for components and joints in a wide variety of environmental conditions.
  • Coatings cured by temperature are designed for a curing process at temperatures around 1000C. The curing temperature, as well as the lack of solvents, allow to shorten the curing process to about 2-3 minutes.

Flexible coatings cured at room temperature have a resilient, dry surface for better handling and abrasion resistance after curing. They require moisture from the air to cure and can be accelerated by providing moderate heat. They are supplied as a solvent-added version for lower viscosity, with a Low-voc version available.
